Turbine Blade Frequency Testing and Tuning

Turbine blades are engineered to endure high static and dynamic stresses. While static stresses can be accurately predicted, dynamic stresses—mainly from high-frequency load changes—are better estimated through experimentation. Ensuring natural frequencies meet specifications is critical, especially for large last-stage steam or gas turbine blades, which are prone to high-cycle fatigue (HCF) from resonance. To prevent critical oscillations, natural frequency testing is conducted on every blade during manufacturing or repair. Additionally, large turbine blades are vulnerable to flutter, a self-exciting vibration phenomenon that can cause severe failures if not addressed.

Mistuning, a technique to enhance flutter resistance, is performed on blade sets to mitigate this risk. Turbinetech GmbH offers expertise in criteria, fixture design, frequency testing, and mistuning for new, repaired, and reverse-engineered blades. Our state-of-the-art frequency test bench includes fixtures, a hydraulic pressure system, frequency analyzer, FFT software, hammer, and microphone.
